Obesity, Diet and Exercise

  • Increase to 85 percent the proportion of people aged 18 and older who engage in any leisure

  • time physical activity. (Baseline: 77 percent in 1995)

  • Increase the proportion of public and private elementary , middle and high schools that require and provide daily physical education for all students. (Baseline: 81 public schools offer physical education 2 days a week -1999)

  • Reduce to less than 15 percent the prevalence of BMI (Body Mass Index) at or above 30.0 among people aged 20 and older. (Baseline: 18 percent in 1995)

Tobacco Use

  • Reduce to 13 percent the proportion of adults (18 and older) who use tobacco products. (Baseline: 25 percent in 1995)

  • Reduce the proportion of young people in grades 9 through 12 who have used tobacco products. (Baseline: 35 percent in 1998)

  • Influence and enact changes in public perception and policy towards the reduction of the use of tobacco products at the state and local level.

Risky Sexual Behavior

  • Reduce to no more than 25 percent the proportion of individuals aged 15-17 who have ever had sexual intercourse. (Baseline: 58 percent in 1995)

  • Reduce pregnancies among females aged 15-17 to no more than 45 per 1,000 adolescents. (Baseline: 49.8 per 1,000 in 1998)

  • Reduce pregnancies among unwed females aged 18 to 24 to 25 percent or less. (Baseline: 33.5 percent in 1997)

Alcohol and Drug Use

  • Reduce to 14 percent the proportion of youth reporting use of alcoholic beverages during past 30 days. (Baseline: 41 percent in 1998)

  • Reduce to 5 percent the proportion of adults age 18 and over reporting binge drinking during the past month. (Baseline: 10 percent in 1995)

  • Increase the perception and knowledge base of the dangers of substance abuse among all segments of the community using integrated efforts between the public and private sectors.

Lack of Involvement in Health Screenings and Other Preventive Measures

  • Increase the number of work sites that offer health promotion and health screening programs, (Baseline: Not available)

  • Increase to 50 percent the proportion of all employees who participate in employer-sponsored

  • health promotion and screening activities. (Baseline: 37 percent, national)

  • Increase by 4 the number of community-wide health fairs that offer comprehensive screenings and follow-up. (Baseline: Not available)

Low Birth Weight Births (LBWB's)

  • By 2007, reduce low birth rate births in Hamilton County to 8.4% of all live births.

  • Desired Milestones: 
      1. Reduce LBWB's to 10.4% in 2004, or 420 LBWB's
      2. Reduce LBWB's to 9.4% in 2005, or 380 LBWB's
      3. Reduce LBWB's to 8.4% in 2006, or 340 LBWB's
